What oils should I use for Baby Massage

This is one of the most frequently asked questions whenever we begin a baby massage course. And the answer is, theres a couple!

Here’s a run down on the best massage oils out there – you may be surprised!

Baby massage has been practiced for centuries and was introduced by Vimala McClure in the 1970’s where it quickly became very popular.

Typically, any oil that you can eat can be used for massage, but the best tend to be cold pressed organic sunflower oil or cold pressed organic vegetable oil.

Cold pressed oils mean that no heat has been used during the pressing process and so the oil retains it’s nutrients much more than if heat is used in the process. Organic oils are healthier too, for obvious reasons, no herbicides or pesticides are used in the process of growing the oils which again means the oils are healthier for babies skin.

Both vegetable oil and sunflower oil are edible oils, meaning if your baby puts their hands in their mouth – highly likely – then these oils are also easily digestible too.

Using placenta oils, which so many people have made now, is also a great oil to use as its natural and contains no harmful ingredients. Avocado Oil can also be used; however be mindful of Coconut oil as this is a nut based oil and some babies can have early unidentified nut allergies.

Are there any oils I shouldn’t use?

Many people ask about the use of olive oil and whilst this was recommended for many years to massage babies with new research suggest this might not be great for our babies skin. Olive Oil is naturally high in oleic acid and low in linoleic acid. Linoleic acid strengthens our babies skin barrier whereas oleic acid can cause babies skin to become more permeable, actually breaking down the skins layers. This means the skins barrier becomes thinner and more open, causing dryness and exacerbating conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Should there be any history of childhood eczema or skin conditions, it would be best not to use olive oil for massage purposes.

Vegetable oil and sunflower oil is high in linoleic acid and low in oleic acid therefore making it a better massage oil for your babies skin.

Take care also of using synthetic oils like baby oil. This oil is also not great for massage purposes despite its nice smell! The reason – the particles that make up synthetic oils are often too large to ever be absorbed into your babies skin meaning the oil will sit on the surface of the skin. Your baby will end up like a slippery little eel and the oil is not great tasting if it’s ingested either. Definitely one to steer clear of.

Where can I find the oils?

Should you struggle to find a cold pressed organic oil in your  local supermarket, any standard vegetable oil or sunflower oil will do.
